1. The qualifying exam is paper-based. The time limit
for each subject is 100 minutes. Students must pass three of the following
eight subjects:
Operating System, Compiler, Computer
Architecture, Theory of Computations, and Algorithms, Data Structure,
Probability Theory, and Computational Linguistics.
Note: CLCLP students must take
Computational Linguistics as one of the qualifying exam subjects.
2. Students either ¡§pass¡¨ or ¡§fail¡¨ the
exam. Students do not receive a specific grade from the qualifying exam.
3. Students must pass three subjects
of qualifying exam within 5 semester after the student's enrollment. In
addition, students can only take each examination twice.
4. Qualifying exam takes place in the
second week of every semester. Students do not have to take different
subjects of the qualifying exam at the same time.
If students
only pass 2 subjects within 2 years, they are allowed to take the
following steps in lieu of the qualifying examination
1.At lease two papers are accepted by
noted journals before graduation.
2.With permission of the thesis
advisor, student can use the course grades (top 20% in that course) in
lieu of the subject that students have not passed
Application for
Reevaluating the Result of Qualifying Exam
1. After the result of qualifying exam
is announced, students may fill out Reevaluation Application Form and
turn the form in to the department office.
2. The Department Chair will call for
a reevaluating meeting in one week after the application form is submitted.
3. The result of reevaluation will be
announced in one week after the reevaluating meeting.
Application for
Qualifying Exam Extension
1. Students with no background in computer
science may apply for extending the
duration of passing the qualifying exam from four semesters to five semesters.
2. Students must apply before the second
week of the first semester after the
student¡¦s enrollment.
3. Students who have never taken a course
in any of the subject that is tested in the
qualifying exam are eligible to apply for extension.
